Maybe you’ve been noticing the skin on your body becoming a little looser and possibly even thinner with age—I sure know I have. Thanks to factors like sun damage, the decline of collagen and elastin production once your late 20s set in, and weight losses and gains (hello, pregnancy!), that youthful tautness—and bounce back—just might not be what it was before, and that’s totally normal. I’m here to tell you, though, that plumper, firmer skin doesn’t always have to require pricey needles, lasers, and elaborate 10-step skincare routines.
While nothing can compare to the results you may get from an in-office procedure—topicals aren’t going to work miracles, after all—you might be surprised at just how far hydration can take droopy skin, dimpled legs, or even crepey arms. Enter: firming body lotions, creams, and oils, which are designed to visibly smooth the skin and improve its look with nourishing ingredients.
Best Firming Body Lotions
“Achieving adequate hydration is a huge feat,” says Nava Greenfield, MD, a board-certified dermatologist who practices at Schweiger Dermatology Group in New York City. “Don’t underestimate hydration. The physical transformation of hydration can also be profound on our skin. The skin will actually appear ‘plumper’ when a lotion used to ‘firm’ is applied. Adding nutrients to the skin on a consistent basis can also help in creating a healthy, firm appearance.”
Like other categories of skincare products, some firming formulas will always be better than others. Finding one that delivers, though, will have your skin looking and feeling its best all year-round. So you’ll want to know how the options out there stack up so you can get the most bang for your budget and unique skin needs.
What To Consider
You’ve probably been using body lotion since middle school, and firming formulas look and feel roughly the same. They’re applied the same way, too; just massage a dollop into the skin, let it dry for a bit, and you’re good to go on with your day. A few key features, though, are what can separate a good option from a great one, and this is what you’ll want to consider when shopping for the best firming body lotions.
Ingredients
For Rachel Nazarian, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist also with Schweiger Dermatology Group in New York City, certain ingredients are a must if you’re looking to tone and improve the skin’s texture. “Many ingredients, such as retinol, bakuchiol, and peptides, can stimulate new collagen formation and protect existing tissue to maintain youthfulness: firm, elastic skin,” she says. “They also help encourage more rapid changeover of the cell cycle, which can make crepey skin look smoother and gives the appearance of firmness.”
Keep an eye out for known temporary tighteners, too, caffeine being chief among them. “I tell patients to look for creams that contain caffeine and/or fruit extracts that temporarily firm the skin,” says Quynh-Giao Sartor, MD, FAAD, a dermatologist with Westlake Dermatology in Houston. She’s also a fan of power plumpers and moisturizing ingredients, like hyaluronic acid. “Humectants such as hyaluronic acid can increase skin turgor (elasticity) and hydration but must be paired with an emollient base,” says Dr. Sartor. “Otherwise, these humectants can dehydrate dry or mature skin.”
Product Type
Ultimately, whatever lotion, oil, serum, or cream you choose comes down to your skin’s needs. On the most basic level, sometimes it’s just a matter of texture preference—maybe you like the lightness of an oil and want to go that route, or the richness of a cream is what you gravitate towards in the colder months. But some skin types really do fare better with certain formats over others, so you’ll want to keep that in mind. “Serums, gels, and lotions are generally better suited for patients with normal or acne-prone skin, whereas creams are better suited for mature skin,” says Dr. Sartor. “Any patient with dry or sensitive skin could benefit from creams, although the humectants that draw in moisturize (hyaluronic acid) are better delivered in products with lighter consistency, such as gels and serums.” This means sensitive skin types may have a little bit of an efficacy tradeoff in terms of moisturization.
Have both sensitive and acne-prone skin? Dr. Sartor recommends using a serum, gel, or lotion in the general area followed by a cream as spot treatment in areas that require more moisturization.
Size
Though not as important as ingredients or format, size can matter when it comes to choosing a firming body lotion, mainly because it can factor into a product’s price and usage. If you want to make a smaller, more expensive lotion go further, consider applying it to target areas—think the butt, thighs, tummy, or upper arms. Consistency is key, though, so a product that you can use more frequently could be better than something you’d have to use sparingly.
How We Chose
For the past few months, I've been testing researching the best firming lotions, using dermatologist recommendations as my guide. I spoke with six skin docs for their picks, and then I got the entire Women’s Health editorial team in on the testing fun. We examined ingredient labels to make sure the formulations were on par with what all of your experts were recommending and then slathered them on ourselves to see if we'd notice a difference. Of the dozens we tested, these were the best of the best.
So, get ready for smoother, tighter, and, yes, firmer skin.
Pros
Affordable so you can use a lot
Absorbs fast and visible results come almost instantly
Cons
Formula can be a little runny
When looking at price, packaging size, and the strength of a given formula’s ingredients, this lightweight cream is hard to beat. The combination of antioxidant Coenzyme Q10, which aids in cell turnover, and L-carnitine, a chemical known to bolster skin energy reserves and oxygen consumption in skin cells, packs a firming and hydrating punch that’ll leave your skin feeling silky-smooth. The brand promises improved tightness in just two weeks’ time with twice daily use, and you can choose between almond and lotus scents depending on your preferences for fragrances.
I loved the gel-like texture of this one—it’s a little bit runny right out of the tube, but it sinks into the skin with minimal rubbing and goes on with a bit of a cooling sensation, which would feel extra nice during the summer months. The brand promises improved tightness in just two weeks’ time with twice daily use. Hours after a quick application (and even a SoulCycle class and quick shower later), my legs looked slightly more taught and still felt supple to the touch, as though I had just put the lotion on. You can choose between almond and lotus scents depending on your preferences for fragrances

Pros
Non-irritating, even for a retinol product
Can be used on the face and body
Cons
May not be for you if you don't like lotions with thick textures
This multitasker can be used on the body and the face, and it's a favorite of board-certified dermatologist, Lauren Penzi, MD for that reason. "It has a powerful retinol and peptide complex that exfoliates to support the skin's renewal process," she says. That means it’ll go to work on discoloration and fine lines while you sleep, since it’s a night treatment.
As far as firming and smoothing goes, per Dr. Penzi, the lotion also has intensive humectant and emollient moisturizers and vitamins that keep the skin hydrated for 24 hours. You can see that in the texture; it’s rich and thick but still rubs in easily and dries quickly, so it’s not a pain to put on before bed. A great place to give it a go first might be the neck and chest, where wrinkles tend to start popping up sooner than we all might like. You may find the formula a little heavy for your actual face.

Best For Instant Illumination
Charlotte Tilbury Magic Body Cream
Pros
Reduces the appearance of cellulite with caffeine and sheen
Non-sticky with a luxurious finish
Cons
On the pricey side
It's not called a magic cream for nothing. This silky body cream blends caffeine and hydrating all-star hyaluronic acid to help hydrate, smooth, and firm the skin. "It also includes the iconic magic 8 matrix, which includes vitamin C and E, aloe vera, camellia oil, rosehip oil and shea butter, plus moisturizing frangipani flower extract," says board-certified dermatologist Marisa Garshick, MD, FAAD. "Together this helps to brighten the skin and leave the skin glowing."
And glow my skin did; of all the formulas I tried, the Magic Body Cream is the one that left the most noticeable sheen and slight blurring effect on my skin. Putting it on does feel luxurious, too; it’s rich but not so heavy that it doesn’t blend well, and it has a similar fragrance to its sister product, Magic Cream [Anti-Aging Moisturizer]. The only downside? It’s expensive, so again, I’d save this moisturizer for when you’re going to be showing a little skin or just target the most visible areas during shorts and bathing suit season, like your arms, legs, and maybe tummy.

Best For Crepey Skin
StriVectin Crepe Control Tightening Body Cream
Pros
Great for mature skin
Not too thick or greasy
Cons
Also one of the pricier picks on our list
"Turmeric root extract, jojoba seed extract, and a buttery blend of shea, murumuru, and cupuacu come together in this deeply moisturizing cream improve the look of skin texture and crepiness," says board-certified dermatologist Brendan Camp, MD, FAAD. The turmeric helps brighten uneven skin tone while peptides and jojoba seed extract work together to tighten the skin and make it appear visibly more firm.
If you’re looking to fight back against particularly crepey arms or kneecaps, Dr. Sartor points out that this formula does include more antioxidants than some of the less expensive drugstore options. She also highlights the caffeine and collagen peptides, which work in tangent with the other firming extracts mentioned above. “This would be a good option for more mature skin in need of a richer moisturizer with more skin benefits,” she says.

Pros
Comes in a 3.8 ounce pump so you can try it before committing to the larger tube
Some customers saw results after a few weeks
Cons
Might be best for problem area (versus all over) application
Part of a system so might work best when used with companion products
Get sculpted, more snatched thighs, upper arms, and abs with Revision Skincare’s lotion that’s specially formulated to spread easily and evenly on thicker body skin that may be thinning some due to age. “Revision BodiFirm is a splurge but a great product with clinical trials and science behind it,” says Dr. Nazarian. “It combines a cocktail of peptides and antioxidants to promote collagen, prevent breakdown, and ingredients like glucosamine to support cell turnover.” It’s also often recommended post-procedure, for microneedling and beyond, meaning this medical-grade product is definitely on dermatologists’ radars.
Dr. Sartor likes the hyaluronic acid in the formula as well but notes that the lotion is part of a three-step regimen. She thinks the promised results—from the fading of sun damage to the tightening of dimply, saggy skin—will be seen with use of the entire system. And even if a little lotion does go a long way, the instructions do recommend applying it twice a day and exfoliating twice a week. So with that does come a significant investment of time and money.

Pros
Thick but not greasy
Makes skin feel softer
Cons
Must use daily to see results
First Aid Beauty is known for catering to sensitive skin, and the brand’s Sculpting Body Lotion is no exception. It contains one of FAB’s hero sensitive skin helpers, colloidal oatmeal, which soothes and repairs dry, distressed skin, and also has allantoin, an ingredient that calms and can offset the irritation stronger actives can sometimes cause, especially in reactive skin types. Even with these sensitivity-safe additions, though, this formula doesn’t compromise on the tightening agents or de-puffers it packs.
"I love this hydrating and firming body lotion that helps to visibly tone and improve the appearance of skin’s texture," says Dr. Penzi. "It contains peptides, caffeine, and glycerin that help the skin to look firm, smooth, and lifted."
A little goes a long way with FAB’s formula. It’s fairly lightweight, super-spreadable, and you can’t really feel it on your skin at all once it absorbs so there’s no greasy film or residue to worry about. What you will notice, though, is that your skin feels very soft post-application, and for me, personally, the rough patches I sometimes get around my elbows and knees were far less noticeable with consistent use.

Pros
Safe for sensitive skin
Light formula
Cons
Can be a little sticky
If you’re looking for an ultralight, gel-like product that can smooth, plump, and deliver silky-to-the-touch skin, then Necsesaire The Body Serum might be the best pick for you. The formula boasts five molecular weights of hyaluronic acid and ceramides that are like a moisture bomb for the body, and the plumping effect is how it delivers that little bit of lift and tautness even the skincare minimalists among us still want.
“This serum does not have any firming ingredients but instead contains hyaluronic acid to plump skin appearance and ceramides to repair the skin barrier,” says Dr. Sartor. “This serum also contains lecithin to help prevent further water loss from the skin surface.”
Though the airy texture of the product makes it perfect for acne-prone skin, Dr. Sartor says it would also work well for sensitive or eczema-prone skin, “as long as it is followed by a more emollient moisturizer to optimize the serum's performance.
Give the travel size a go and see for yourself. Mix with moisturizer if you find the texture a bit too sticky. You may be coming back for the full-size ASAP.

Pros
Recyclable glass bottle is made with recycled ocean plastic
Lightweight texture and described as non-greasy
Cons
Citrusy scent might not be for everyone
Full disclosure: Dr. Greenfield does consult for REN Clean Skincare, but she’d recommend the brand’s Atlantic Kelp and Microalgae Anti-Fatigue Toning Body Oil regardless. The whole REN line features sustainably-sourced, plant-forward bioactives and is formulated without synthetic fragrance and colors, petrochemicals, silicones, and sulphates. Plus, many products come in zero waste packaging and easy to recycle containers. So if you’re looking for something simple and straightforward but still luxe, the Atlantic Kelp and Microalgae Body Oil might be your best match.
“It is jam-packed with nutrients sourced from natural kelp and red (algae) and microalgae extracts, which contain magnesium and phytosterols to help your skin stay hydrated, balanced, smooth-out roughness, and appear tighter,” says Dr. Greenfield. “This product is mid-range for cost but is well worth the price.” For a quick plump-up, massage into your skin in sweeping circular motions, and wait for the oil to absorb before dressing.

Pros
Extremely affordable for such a power-packed formula
Big bottle so it will last a while
Cons
Does contain silicone, so might not be suitable for acne-prone skin
Sometimes the best products are the ones you’ll use religiously. To that end, you can slather on this lotion morning, noon, and night, thanks to its under $10 price tag and light-but-creamy texture. It’s worth noting that the brand promises visibly firmer skin in just 21 days right on the bottle, and that claim doesn’t appear to be total lip service.
“Although the role of topical collagen isn't fully understood yet, this product contains a hydrating form of vitamin B3, niacinamide, and a form of B5 panthenol, which strengthen skin and improve skin quality,” says Dr. Nazarian. “It also absorbs really nicely and applies easily and quickly, making it a great and affordable option for improving skin health.”
Dr. Sartor mentions the lotion does include a nice mix of moisturizers (petrolatum, stearic acid) to prevent water loss as well as antioxidants (niacinamide, tocopheryl acetate) for firming, especially for its cost. “It also contains free fatty acids (palmitic acid) to repair skin barrier,” she adds. The only downside for the price? The formula does have silicone and a synthetic fragrance, so if you have acne-prone or sensitive skin, you might want to skip it for those reasons.

What are the benefits of firming body lotions?
It’s important to manage your expectations for firming lotions—they’re not the cure-all for sagging skin. Severe laxity and deep folds aren’t going to disappear overnight, but your skin will perk up and even plump a bit temporarily upon application.
“You can expect to see your skin slowly showing fewer fine lines and less sag,” says Dr. Greenfield. “A firming cream also has the potential to introduce nutrients that allow your skin to feel smoother and more supple.”
How to apply a firming body lotion
Proper timing is key for absorption and even application, so do yourself a favor and apply right after you’ve just bathed so it sinks in easily, especially if you’re only using this kind of product once a day.
“It is best to apply body lotion when your skin is still damp from a shower but not wet,” says Dr. Greenfield. “Towel dried is optimal. After exfoliating, it is crucial to apply a moisturizer. Best results will untimely be with consistent and liberal use.”

What results should I expect from firming body lotions?
“Creams are not capable of the same type of tightening that lasers and surgical options can offer,” says Dr. Nazarian. “Despite this, with consistent, continued use, you can certainly see improvement in laxity over time.” But again, commitment to regular use will impact results because everyone’s skin is fighting an uphill battle to a certain extent, at least when it comes to the loss of skin firmness and volume.
“One of the most important things to remember is that the aging process never really stops,” says Dr. Nazarian. “All these creams and topicals that are used to improve quality of skin should really be continued long-term.”
Are firming lotions safe to use?
The short answer is yes—but with the caveat that it’s possible to have some kind of a reaction to any body lotion or cream. “Most of these body firming lotions have very little risk,” says Dr. Nazarian. “They are often directed to be used daily, some even twice a day. Major risks include irritation from one of the ingredients or a potential allergy to one of the ingredients.”
One watch out is to steer clear of anything with retinol in it, if you’re nursing or pregnant, and obviously, you should discontinue use of a product you have a negative reaction to. “Occasionally, people may experience drying of their skin, especially if the ingredients have the ability to decrease oil production, such as with retinol,” adds Dr. Nazarian. “Monitor for those changes and decrease use if they are noted.”
