Brief Introduction

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic is a reboot of the MLP franchise by Powerpuff Girls artist Lauren Faust, currently viewed by (almost) the entire Internet, not only the intended audience. Here is a place where we discuss the joy of friendship.

It's a clever show. It has excellent writing, character dynamics, humor, animation, and generally treats kids seriously rather than condescending to them. It has every right to be a 20 minute corporate committee designed infomercial, but it's not.

Pixar technically makes shows for little boys, and produce some of the best animation in the world.

No Brony could ask for more. I recommend watching the episodes in order. They're all up on Youtube. Unusually, Hasbro seems fine with having the entire series up in public because they've made no move to bring down any of the episodes. Search for "Friendship is Magic Episode 1" and you should find the series pretty easily... Or search for "Sharing is Magic" Google Doc. That is all.

Whoa, calm down there. The show is light hearted, optimistic fun but it's not for everyone. It's good fun, the community is good fun, and everyone can do with a reminder that friendship is magic but if it doesn't gel for you we'll love and tolerate you anyway. Plus, you might hit the wrong episode. Ask first?

> Derpy Hooves/Doctor Whoof

Two minor background characters who were adopted as emblems of 4chan. Derpy Hooves is so named due to an animation error in the first episode that had her eyes facing in different directions; 4chan has assigned her the role of Ponyville's mailpony, and her only line so far has been "Muffins". The show's animators are aware of Derpy's popularity and she's shown up a few times recently with her eyes obviously derped. Currently made canon in Feeling Pinkie Keen and in Faust's picture showcased below, Derpy was deemed important enough to appear in storyboards for Season II.

Dr. Whoof is a pony with an hourglass cutie mark; he and his kin save time and space very quietly off camera.

Deadly's Ironically Presented Anti-Spoiler Measures

DO YOU HATE SPOILER TAGS?

Well, Deadly's here to help you get rid of them... with a vengeance! Create a new bookmark in your browser and copy the code below as the link/url of said bookmark. Name it something helpful, like "Spoilers B GONE!" or whatever. Then whenever you view a thread here on GitP you just hit the bookmark and BAM! no more spoilers.

You won't even see the boxes, just the bare innards in all their gory glory.

It also makes sure that no image is wider than 600px, to avoid stretching pages, and will attempt to "intelligently" remove repeated images except avatars. Neat, huh? Sadly that last part means stuff like pony emotes may get lost but the forum doesn't make it easy for me to single out images in quotes as I'd have liked... that's an open problem, I guess.

Tested in Firefox, Chrome and Opera. Should work in any modern browser, but you never know with these things.

While this doesn't really make much difference as to whether it's a solo or not (it's not), I find it interesting that many of Rainbow's lines in "Find a Pet" are more sprechstimme than sung.

I've always considered it a question less can she sing but rather can she sing as Applejack and Rainbow Dash? She clearly can do the former (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTk6eY9EY5g) but doesn't sound overly like either of the latter to me at least.

That's a pretty serious vocal modification and different enough her other career is probably not quite the asset it might ostensibly seem to be.

Dashie is down reasonably well by True True Friend so that's there to be used... AJ I'm still not sure she's quite broken out into song versus aforementioned sprechstimme. I'm glad enough we have quality VAs for the Mane Six at all that can do different voices, too many anime dub actors say really only have one voice. I thus politely don't expect them to have to also sing in an unnatural voice.

Pinkie And AJ seem to make one of the best parings for setting up a good joke. I really want an episode of those two just stuck together in some absurd manner. That has potential for hilarity.

I don't think it would really work. Applejack isn't a background pony because background ponies don't exist in Equestria. Unless you wanted to do something like Twilight being kidnapped or just elsewhere and Applejack had to take charge of the Mane 6 to save her/solve the problem.

It was a very funny episode but I wouldn't say Applejack was overshadowed. Ultimately the jokes were simply jokes and Applejack was the focus of the story.

Also I agree, Pinkie and AJ need more time on screen together. Plus I like the ApplePie ship. Or RariPie. I think those two ponies could both use some more Laughter in their lives.

I was using the numbering convention they used in the Turnabout Storm videos. So for the split chapter, I'd refer to them as 3/4 - Twilight, and 3/4 Phoenix.

By 4/4 I mean the chapter that happens after the split chapter. And if you've seen it, I'm sure you know why it was memorable. Apart from being the 'finale'! :smalltongue:

Speaking of Pinkie and Applejack, I'm actually debating whether to include her in that Western Fic I've been talking about. Based on the RPG Deadlands. I know that Applejack and Trixie will be in it (and probably Braeburn and Little Strongheart later on in the story) I'm just kind of worried about the group dynamic, since this will probably warrant a dark tag (deadlands is a horror western after all) so I worry that Pinkie and Trixie together would create a little too much comic relief.

On the other hand, she could make a fine Mad Scientist for their little party.

Hello, Ponythread! Long time, no post.

As for what I've been up to pony-wise, not too much. Today is/was Halloween ComicFest, and so the local comic store was handing out free comics. This included the Halloween Edition (http://www.equestriadaily.com/2013/07/mlp-comic-halloween-edition-on-way.html), although for people worried about missing part of the story, it was just the first part of Issue #4 (main cast getting th Chrysalis's castle and confronting her) rather than a side story or anything different.

I also picked up the Pony Tales comic, which is a bundle of the first six micro-series (one for each main character) in semi-hardcover, with art for the extra bonus covers inside. It's not surprising to see, as they did the same with the main series, but is welcome to pick up.

Other than that, not too much new. I'll be picking up the new main series/new micro series when it comes to the comic store this month. I'm looking forward to the CCG (although my wallet isn't) and the new DVD this December.

How's Ponythread been handling itself lately?

Twilight would probably be some sort of fae, or other highly magical creature. I'm thinking likely a gnome (organized, highly orderly) or some sort of time-fairy, given how determined she is to keep things in a proper timely fashion. :smalltongue:

Rarity is definitely an elf. Beautiful, vain, egotistical, generous, and haughty describe both very well. :smallwink:

Fluttershy would be an ent/treant, or something similar. The idea fits so perfectly. Or perhaps a dryad, who would want to be a treant.

Applejack is very down-to-earth and focused on getting things done. This makes me think some sort of house-gnome, drawf, or other sprite who stays in the home and aids with the work. The Elves and the Shoemaker (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Elves_and_the_Shoemaker) kind of thing. If not, then she's probably be simply some sort of talking spirit animal; something like an ox or buffalo, who works hard for its life but is willing to talk with those it deems worthy of respect.

Rainbow Dash reminds me of Quetzalcoatl, the rainbow feathered serpent of the sky.

Pinkie Pie is going to just be something random. She's somewhat like Cthulhu that wants to be a proper houseguest, and so she serves you tea while not realizing her presence melts your brain. :smalltongue: Or just a combination of every trickster god out there, from Loki to Coyote to whoever else comes to mind.

To be honest... While I wasn't really happy with episode when I saw it I kind of disregarded it as a stupid Pinky Pie episode. Yeah, I don't like the message but I really can't get that angry at it... Or I'd have to get angry at Cutie Mark Chronicles as well. I never knew it really was that controversial in the fandom, though. Then again, I'm not that involved.

For me, I feel like this episode has a good moral in it, they just...phrased it absolutely the wrong way. Because, yes, there are things in life you have to take on faith, things that you simply won't ever fully understand, or things that you ruin because you spent your time overthinking them. Heck, Pinkie Pie is evidence of incomprehensibility with or without any sort of supernatural sense. But the way that they phrased it, combined with the "pure scientific logic vs. wibbly wobbly magics" episode, left a sour taste in a lot of folks' mouths, methinks.

Science is full of things in that category. Like gravity. Which... now that I think about the episode more, to me it makes Twilight even less of a useful choice for this episode's lesson given her intellectual background. I actually really liked this episode. It was silly and fun, plus it had a nice scene involving a hydra.

I like to view it more as a cautionary tale of what can happen when an individual only has a slight grasp of the scientific method. :smallwink:

The show was slightly wrong in that episode: there's always a reason for things, but sometimes you have to accept that reason is beyond your ability to discover within the limitations of your current knowledge and technology (or magic). Just because you can't find an explanation doesn't mean there isn't one.

It was more forgivable in the 60s when such science wasn't all that well known then. 13 years ago I watched a demonstration of a scanner that can look at any liquid and then tell you nearly all the ingredients inside. The demo used a blood sample. Without extracting it from the host body.

Arguably. I've seen more then one philosophy argue that either the world is inherently unknowable or that things are essentially random. Or that some things at least are random.

So yesterday left my house a 8:00 AM for a marching band rehearsal. Game home at 11:30 for lunch and left again at 12:30. for the U of A invitational. We do really well and get back on he busses around 10:00 PM. Come to a plaza for food were literally the only restraint open is In n' Out Burger (fortunately my mom, who was a chaperone, found a Mc Donalds in a Wallmart). On the way back one of the tires on my bus blows, so we have to load everyone onto the other three busses. Finally get home around 3:00 PM.

Ahh, marching band. Still had a great time.

To be fair, most of Star Trek had a questionable grasp on science in general. With varying levels of absurdity. I remember one episode were they were scanning a planet and said it's surface temperate was minus big number degrees Celsius. Unfortunately, minus big number degrees Celsius happened to be lower than absolute zero.

Through the Well of Pirene: Mythological world building YAY! Like seriously, putting classical fairy tales into an MLP context is one of my favorite things.

Twilight Landing:

New things I picked up:

Twilight's Harem: NSFW but as far as Twilight harem stories go this is the funniest I think I have ever read. Mainly because it's not even about the other Elements.

Lunaverse is having a Nightmare Night writing event. It's pretty great so far!

One Tenth-Bit: Estee continues being awesome. Perfect blend of humor and genuine social commentary. Also, a very unique writing style that I cannot get enough of. Like, the continues references to Rarity seeing how things will play out? It's that kind of word play that makes this more than functional but in fact a work of art in the writing itself.

Triptych: The sequel to Apotheosis, not the one by Estee. The main thing I liked about this is how it handle divinity. I've said before that I am a huge fan of Old Magic, the magic of concepts and symbolism. Celestia talking to the zebra gods is probably the best of this.

The Wizard and the Lonely Princess: Harry Potter crossover. Luna meets Harry while trapped on the moon and now Harry has a Head Luna. And NMM is hanging around too. Mainly I like how this sets up a point of divergence, and then follows through on examining the effect it has while the rest of the HP universe keeps running canonically.

Eh, shoveling snow isn't too bad as long as it's six inches or under (an this is coming from somepony with a long driveway), the real pain is when it partially melts, at which point you're either dealing with an extremely heavy layer of slush at the bottom, or worse have a layer of solid ice that needs to be scraped up.

Five Guys, on the other hand...

Put it this way. I spent two years as a missionary in Philadelphia, Jersey, and the Delaware peninsula. I made tons of friends, became fluent in Spanish and several mexican dialects, and still have plans to go back some day. When I go, I'm bringing my family, and there are two restaurants I'm taking them to eat at: Five Guys, and Gooie Louies.

As a side note, if you live anywhere near Philadelphia, you need to go to Gooie Louie's. It's not much to look at, consisting of a sandwich line at the back of a small store, but it's totally worth it. In the words of one Yelp.com reviewer:
Well, do you remember in elementary school that really big kid? The one that was either about 3-5yrs older and was held back or perhaps was on some sort of growth hormone as his/her father hated the Soviets and was seeing to breed some sort of super athlete to compete against them in the next Olympics? Yeah, pretty weird right?

Yeah, that's what Gooey's steak is like compared to most any other cheesesteaks in the city. Awkwardly huge, and probably a weapon against the Soviets.

Seriously, I think they kept that thing out back and fed it other steaks just to keep it fat and then warmed it up shortly before I arrived.

Frankly, I could probably buy one of those cheesesteaks and launch it into the Delaware and make my way out to ocean to cross the pond and treat some Brits to perhaps the finest sandwich our country has to offer. Not to mention, I'm a huge fan of Roald Dahl and I can't think of any other way to pay homage. Mikey and the Giant Cheesesteak it is.

During that aforementioned mission, I think the worst we got was something like eighteen inches in two days, followed by a rain and hailstorm.

Did I mention that my companion and I were on bikes?

Nothing, but nothing, compares to Five Guys. It's like a delicious coronary waiting to happen, with a side of grease in a bag. It's like eating a slice of America: oversized, greasy, and amazing.

I just went there today (there is one near the bank I use). Good, but too expensive. $11 for a burger, fries, and drink. And I got the smallest fries. A medium drink for $1.99 is insane. Fries were good though, and this is coming from someone who hates most place's fries.

So, I recently got back into Dwarf Fortress which got me thinking, that ponies would I take along on an embark team?

Twilight - She could, um, be the most accurate book keeper ever? Past that, not much of her magic could be useful for Dwarf "civilization" aside from teleportation.
Rainbow Dash - Fast as heck, shown to have incredible strength and dogged loyalty. To the military!
Applejack - Strong and a good farmer. Would help keep the food stockpiles full.
Rarity - She could find gems and make dresses. Could produce some nice trade goods though she might be against living as a Dwarf (that is to say in a hole without personal hygiene)
Fluttershy - Could potentially train animals but I doubt she would be willing to train them for war.
Pinkie Pie - A moral officer that would keep Dwarves happy and thus reduce the chance of a tantrum spiral. Her Pinkie Sense would help a ton because most of your problem in Dwarf Fortress can be attributed to vague and immediate events (Ear flap, tummy wiggle, itchy chin. There is a dead butterfly jamming the front door open during an elephant invasion!) That being said, Pinkie Pie seems to love Fun. And we all know what Fun means in Dwarf Fortress...

The pollen/leaves or whatever - even assuming they could affect Undead (the whole "immune to Fort save unless it affects objects", is a close enouh approximation to be broadly true) and even if they could "detect" me to do anything on account of the mithril alloy composition of my current physical form - would likely be killed stone dead instantly on contact by my life-drain and attendant freezing touch (if indeed they survived the area auras of same, were they active.)

Unless I'm way of, Lixies a Q, and may be immune to Poison Joke.

Bleakbane is Undead, and thus is Immune to Poison piriod, though if you have contained sample of poison joke, I could make a Positoxin out of It's Extract.

Granted, his shapeshifitng immunity might render it ineffective regueradless. Unless Poison Joke uses it's hosts own mana to produce it's effects, inwhich case, it might trigger an extreme adaptation if It hasn't been cured by the time he experiences a Spirit Vessel Will Refinement.

Though I assume that after the "Chibi" incident, The Army of the red spear would have tested as many variants of the "Shapeshifting Plus stress at time of refinement" as possible, so if Lichy hasn't done it to himself, it probably wouldn't have worked.

Is that how it worked Commodore? You refinement cannibalized the Shapeshifting effect you had on yourself, allowing for a much more extreme adaptation than is possible with just one refinement? just what sort of thing is an average unique adaptation? and about what percentage of Spirit bound undead get them? is it somehow tied to age, with older Liches being more likely to develop unique adaptations? Or does it have more to do with those who gain tem having a Strong personality that is reflected by the adaptation?

So... things like what happened with you usually take dozens of refinements over the course of centuries? So, is it even possible for you to experience more refinements? if so, I'm afraid of what your going to end up as.

I take it that gaining comepletely new abillities in a sigle refinement is incredibly rare? or even unique to you? Jus what sort of thing is normal for a refinement? I get the General "Stonger Lich" bit, but is it more individual aspects of the Spirit bound Condition being Dialed up to some degree. Or is it more things that ae related to what they are besides being a lich.

So first of all, I agree with the Lich, there's no way it could affect him.
But secondly, if it did, it's obvious what it would do.

It would make him squishy and super huggable, reverse the polarity of his various don't-touch-me negative energy and cold fields, so anything nearby is constantly healed and made to feel warm and fuzzy just from being around him.

Edit: Also, huh at that particular structure. Why would anyone want to trade in a partnership? I understand why liquidity is good in theory, but when any General Partner has the power to force the business to unwind, you're hardly buying long-term security. The reason people form corporations in the first place, double tax or not, is to create an independent entity that doesn't die with them (well, one of the reasons, at any rate).

It's deliberately a setup that favours single, large investors with relatively short-term ventures. Not being a corporation means they don't have to respect shareholder rights and various other corporate government legislation. "Managers become the sort of uncontrolled administrator of a kind of trust".

In addition, these generally aren't used for rank-and-file corporations, they're often used as financial structures for the private equity holding companies that sit atop industrial empires.

Generally a MLP creates this frenic cycle of a company, which sucks in a breath of money at the start of the year and exhales it all the end. It's a strange mutant business model with an interesting balance of benefits and costs.

there's this thing called a positoxin, that's made by infusing a poison or drug with positive energy repeatedly as it's being made. if you do it right, it'll affect the undead as well as normal poison affects the living(who may or may not be immune to the positoxin, depending on what kind of positoxin it is)

I know how to make them, but every positoxin is different, making one out of poison joke extract could take months.

Hmm, as a sidenote, any advice from anyone on learning Python? I've got 1-2 busy weeks to get a decent grasp, but my usual learning method (picking random project, and look stuff up in reference documents when I get stuck) is very time consuming.

And it is filled with the corpses of thousands of moths.

They're everywhere. Every corridor is lined with their bodies. So many. So many dead damn moths. So many that they couldn't even sweep them up, they just swept them to the sides to deal with later. This beautiful, hallowed building is filled with the mindless deaths of millions and millions of idiotic moths who profaned it briefly with their pointless stupidity and then died, leaving hollow, fluff-corpses.

Most moths don't have mouths; they store up fat as catepillars, and just live off that as moths so they can focus on breeding. They die within a month because they literally starve themselves to death.

Cicadas are pretty similar to your moths, coming out in such large numbers that they literally cannot be eaten by predators fast enough to prevent them from breeding. U.S. varieties in particular like coming out in swarms, especially fun if you're living in one of the places where the 17-year cycle and 13-year cycle come out at the same time. While that does sound horrible I can't really hate all moths, some of them are actually fairly nice looking compared to most insects, and they're rarely malicious towards humans, just dumb flying things that run into lights.

But I do concede that this is yet another reason that Australia is Earth's deathworld.

I remember once when I was younger, we'd go out for recess and throw basketballs at the trees, then watch as they'd disgorge black clouds of fleeing cicadas. It was fun, up until we'd wedge the ball somewhere in the branches and nobody wanted to climb up after it.

Winter would come, we'd get blizzards and a few feet of snow on the ground, and he'd still be outside in shorts and sandals. I'm actually rather curious to see how he'd fare in a desert.

Moths are the same type of creatures as shrimp, crab, and lobster. I'd assume they taste like non-fishy shrimp if you wanted to try some. Some people actually do eat moths, although I'd want to cover some understandable health concerns about them before doing so.

I was doing a bit of writing today and I came across an odd thought. Does anyone here believe that changelings have the pegasi cloud-walking ability? Or perhaps they can inherit it by taking a pegasus disguise?

I decided personally that they cannot in either case (thus making it one way of telling a changeling from a pegasus), but then there is a cloud-walking spell... so my thought ended on the idea similar to pyros in TF2: Twilight flying around Cloudsdale casting Dispel Magic on all her allies, and then suddenly the Spy falls through the floor. :smalltongue:

Eh. Too D&D feeling for me to be honest.

I can't say I've ever considered it, but it makes more sense to me if Changelings can in fact walk on clouds than if a type of pony was basically immune to changelings.

Eh... I'm not seeing it. Don't get me wrong. NIHM is an awesome movie, loved it to bits (Literally. My sister and I destroyed the VHS tape it was on, IIRC) when I was a kid. But that scene is merely Pinnochio-levels of creepy. My standard for nightmarish childhood entertainment is the Watership Down movie. 'Dogs aren't dangerous!' is a line branded into my mind. so maybe I'm a little messed up.

I should rewatch NIHM, though... It's been 15 or 16 years at least.

I'm not sure "Dog's aren't dangerous!" is even one of the top 3 nightmare-fuel moments in that film, but when it comes to mental trauma, to each their own I guess. :smallbiggrin:

I'm pretty sure they could, it seems like they would have the same power as pegasi, or at least would be able to fly around.
Though that does sound like a fun concept :smalltongue:
