Suspects sought in armed rural break-ins

3:27 PM

Police are searching for suspects after three break-and-enters involving “numerous” suspects believed to be armed with at least one gun.

Portage la Prairie RCMP were called about thefts involving the same group of culprits in the Rural Municipality of North Norfolk between about 3:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. Sunday.

The suspects gained access to shops on the properties and stole all-terrain vehicles, power tools and a pickup truck. The cream-coloured 2010 Dodge Ram’s licence plate number is KHP 257.

The Manitoba First Nations Police Service officer eventually found the suspects’ vehicle in Sandy Bay First Nation and arrested a 17-year-old female who lives in that community.

No charges after man injured in arrest

1:33 PM

The province’s police watchdog says an officer’s use of force was reasonable after investigating the arrest of a man who suffered multiple broken bones.

A medical report confirmed a fracture to his breastbone, left ribs, left orbital bone and nose, the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba said in a news release Monday.

“Medical reports could not determine the age of the orbital fracture,” the report said.

Winnipeg police were sent to the 1000 block of Andrews Street about a man threatening to kill his girlfriend on April 23, 2024. Police said the man was in a drug-induced psychosis, threatened to kill the officers and attacked the closest one, swinging at his head twice in a hallway.

The officer investigating said he struck the man five to seven times while he was standing and another eight to 12 times as he was assaulting officers and resisting arrest while on the ground.

Vacant Magnus Avenue home to be demolished after morning fire

12:45 PM

A vacant house on Magnus Avenue was set to be demolished after a fire Monday morning.

Fire crews were sent to the one-and-a-half-storey former home on the 700 block at 7:27 a.m. and used an aerial ladder to battle the blaze.

Neighbouring homes have been temporarily evacuated as a precaution, and the City of Winnipeg’s emergency social services team was sent to the block to help affected residents.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said in a news release that it had structural concerns about the home because it sustained significant smoke, fire and water damage.

Road closures in the area will remain in place until work is completed at the scene, the WFPS said in a news release shortly after noon.

“Once crews clear the scene, residents should use caution in the area, as water used to fight the fire will be frozen, creating slippery conditions,” the release said.

Province provides $500K for new charging stations

12:24 PM

The provincial government is providing $500,000 for 51 new electric-vehicle charging stations.

Twenty-three of the stations will be installed in the Rural Municipality of Ritchot, while four will be in Brandon. Morden, Pinaymootang First Nation and Misipawistik Cree Nation will get three each, while the RM of Hanover will get two and the RM of Brokenhead one.

Three multi-unit residential developments will get four stations each, Environment and Climate Change Minister Mike Moyes said in a news release Monday. Two of the developments are in Winnipeg, and one is in Portage la Prairie.

The money is from the Climate Action Fund.

“Our government is committed to taking real action to fight climate change and the transition to electric vehicles will help drive down emissions,” Moyes said in a news release. “As more Manitobans look to make the switch to electric vehicles, there is a growing need to ensure reliable charging infrastructure in strategic locations.”
